Children's Promise Act

How Your Business Can Support Prentiss Christian School at ZERO Net Cost!

Did you know that you can cut your Mississippi state tax bill in half while directly funding classrooms, technology, and tuition assistance at Prentiss Christian School?

Through the Mississippi Children’s Promise Act, local businesses can redirect their mandatory state tax liability straight to certified schools like Prentiss Christian School. Instead of writing a check to the state government, you can keep those dollars right here in our community.

Steps for Businesses

To use the Mississippi Children’s Promise Act to divert your corporate state tax liability directly to Prentiss Christian School (PCS), your business must secure an approved allocation from the state before making the donation. This dollar-for-dollar tax credit allows businesses to redirect up to 50% of their Mississippi tax liability to a certified Educational Services Charitable Organization (ESCO).

Because the statewide private school funding pool is heavily capped and operates on a highly competitive, first-come, first-served basis, following these precise steps is critical.

Step 1: Calculate Your Maximum Donation Limit

  • Evaluate Your Taxes: Review your estimated annual Mississippi tax liability. The credit applies to Corporate Income Tax, Insurance Premium Tax, Insurance Premium Retaliatory Tax, or Ad Valorem Tax (for non-corporate entities).

  • Apply the 50% Cap: Calculate 50% of that total. For example, if your business owes $20,000 in state income taxes, your maximum eligible donation and credit cap is $10,000.

  • Unused Credits: If your final tax liability ends up lower than your donation, the state allows you to carry forward the remaining credit balance for up to 5 years.

Step 2: Request Online Pre-Approval (Time-Sensitive)

  • The January Window: The Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR) resets its application portal every early January. The entire state cap for schools is often exhausted within the first few minutes of opening, so preparations must be completed ahead of time.

  • Access the Portal: Log into your corporate account via the Mississippi Department of Revenue TAP Portal.

  • Submit the Form: Scroll to “Apply Online” and select Apply for a Charitable Contribution Credit. Select your respective business entity type (Corporation, LLC, Partnership, or Sole Proprietorship).

  • Designate the School: Input the required donation details and explicitly select Prentiss Christian School as your chosen ESCO.

Step 3: Complete the Donation

  • Await Approval: The DOR will issue an official approval or denial notification letter to your business dashboard (usually within 14 to 30 days) confirming your specific credit allocation.

  • Observe the 60-Day Deadline: Once you receive your allocation letter, you have exactly 60 days to make the physical cash or check contribution directly to Prentiss Christian School. Failure to pay within this timeframe will cause your allocation to forfeit back into the state pool.

  • Obtain Your Receipt: When making the payment, instruct the administration at PCS that this is a Children’s Promise Act contribution so they can provide you with an official, dated gift receipt.

Step 4: Lock In the Credit

  • Upload Verification: Immediately log back into the MS DOR TAP Portal.

  • Submit Proof: Scan and upload the official gift receipt provided by PCS to your pending application to finalize the credit.

  • File Your Returns: When your CPA or tax preparer files your annual Mississippi business tax return, apply the approved credit to cut your tax payment in half.

Critical Timing Strategy

Because the state caps the overall school funding pool, the credits are typically fully claimed within less than 5 to 10 minutes of the 8:00 AM opening bell.

To ensure your application gets through, you should log into your business account on the Mississippi Department of Revenue TAP Portal at least 15 minutes early and have all company tax IDs and Prentiss Christian School's official designation info ready to copy and paste.

Future Application Opening Windows

  • For the upcoming tax year: The application is scheduled to open on Monday, January 4, 2027, at 8:00 AM CST.
